Tim Tebow is wildly popular among Major League Baseball fans. Wait, what?
Replica jerseys bearing the name and number of the famous New York Mets minor leaguer were the top-selling shirts on two prominent online retail platforms, according to ESPN’s Darren Rovell. This comes on the first day Tebow’s No. 15 Mets jersey and other merchandise went on sale to the public.
“Based on jerseys sold Monday, Tebow’s was shown as the No. 1 best-seller on Fanatics and MLB’s online shop, ahead of stars such as David Ortiz and Kris Bryant,” Rovell writes.
Big League teams don’t normally promote the images of minor league players, but a special agreement between Tebow and the jersey manufacturer exists to help break from the norm.
“But sources said Tebow signed a bridge agreement with the official jersey supplier Majestic Athletic last week, which allows the company to merchandise him before he makes the majors,” Rovell added.
Tebow jerseys were among the highest-sellers during his college football and NFL careers. He now holds top status among baseball players, if only for one day.
The Mets signed him to a minor league contract earlier this month, paying him a $100,000 bonus as part of the deal. They can recoup that amount by selling just 834 jerseys (at $119.99) at Citi Field, something they haven’t started doing. Yet.
