The NFL season is long and grueling, so sometimes it’s important to step back and appreciate the little things.
Chicago Bears coach John Fox apparently got that message. In a conference call Thursday with Detroit reporters ahead of his team’s matchup with the Lions, Fox admitted to a guilty pleasure: He likes saying the name of Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter.
“I love the name,” Fox said, via the Detroit Free Press. “He and (Minnesota Vikings cornerback) Captain Munnerlyn. I recruited Captain way back when I was in Carolina. Those two are right up there (as the best names in sports), player and coach. But I love saying Jim Bob’s name.”
We can confirm Jim Bob Cooter’s name is, in fact, fun to say — you should try it some time — and we’re glad Fox corroborated with us.
After he was done gushing about phonetics, Fox added he also respects Cooter as a coach.
“He’s done a terrific job,” Fox said. “Very, very good, young coach. Jim Bob’s a good man, got a lot of respect for him. He’s a bright, young coach.”
Fox is right — Cooter’s name may be fun to say, but his offense isn’t fun to play against. The 8-4 Lions have scored 20 or more points in three of their last four games, all wins, and could be a tall task for their 3-9 NFC North rivals.
