The Rally: The Rankings, Explained

Part two of this week's rankings Rally continues, and concludes, with Kamakshi Tandon's dissection of the current system and the weird results it can produce. I won't attempt a response; there's nothing I could possibly add. Hope you enjoy this, and learn as much as I did from it. I'll be back tomorrow *** Steve,That’s a very incisive remark by Illie Nastase, especially since he was one of the first to have none other than No. 1 hung over his head. Your point about the psychological impact of rankings is a very interesting one. It definitely creates a very explicit and fluid kind of hierarchy we wouldn’t otherwise have, with costs and benefits. We’ve seen the impact of it in very stark

The Burden of Being Roger Federer

I spent the Thursday night's men's semifinal moving back and forth between a seat in Laver Arena and my seat in the pressroom, where I watched on the TV monitor in front of me. Live impressions mixed with a little of the television commentary is the ideal combination for getting your thoughts together about a match.Doing a guest stint as a commentator for Australia’s Channel 7 was Pat Rafter. At that Point Again

Puncher vs. counter-puncher makes sense. One player attacks, the other uses that pace to fire back. Puncher vs. puncher isn’t as elegant, but you can certainly follow it. Two guys take turns belting the ball. Counter-puncher vs. counter-puncher is harder to figure. Neither can play their game. They’re robbed of something to punch against. Andy Murray vs. Alexander Dolgopolov was the latter, and it was predictably unpredictable. If it showed us anything, it showed us how deeply ingrained Murray’s defensive mind-set is. For the most part, it was Dolgopolov who attacked and Murray who defended. Murray’s speed and consistency allowed him to remain the counter-puncher, and allowed him to win in four sets. The Ukrainian played well and tried just

Novak Djokovic vs Tomas Berdych — 2011 Australian Open Quarterfinals

2008 Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic faces Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Australian Open. Both players are hot. Berdych easily dismissed Fernando Verdasco while Djokovic had no problem with Nicolas Almagro. I expect Berdych to play first-strike tennis -- take chances and keep the points short -- because longer rallies favor Djokovic. My call is Djokovic in four competitive sets. What do you think? Who wins this Australian Open qua...
