It might not alleviate the pain of the Red Sox’ September collapse, but Jacoby Ellsbury and Adrian Gonzalez have a chance to bring home some individual accolades this offseason. Both Ellsbury and Gonzalez have been nominated for 2011 Greatness in Baseball Yearly (GIBBY) Awards.
Ellsbury was already named the American League Comeback Player of the Year earlier this month and he has a chance to earn AL MVP honors. But the Red Sox center fielder has also been nominated for player of the year, defensive player of the year and comeback player of the year as part of the GIBBY Awards.
Gonzalez joins Ellsbury on the impressive list of player of the year candidates.
Ellsbury put together a monster 2011 season, just a year after playing in only 18 games. He hit .321 with 32 home runs and 105 RBIs at the top of the Sox order. He also swiped 39 bases.
Gonzalez, meanwhile, showed why the Sox coveted him enough to make a big trade for him last offseason. He hit .338, while compiling 27 home runs and 117 RBIs.
