Mookie Betts Explains What Happened On Wild Catch-Turned-Double Play

Mookie Betts made one of the weirder plays of the season Tuesday night in the Bronx. It was also one of the most impressive.

The Boston Red Sox’s right fielder lost a liner off the bat of Chase Headley in the Yankee Stadium lights and went into his slide a bit prematurely. He somehow managed to reach across and over his body and make the catch anyway before jumping up and quickly doubling off Starlin Castro at first base.

It wasn’t enough to win the game, though, as the Red Sox had their 11-game winning streak snapped in a 6-4 loss to the New York Yankees. Still, it was pretty impressive nonetheless.

Check out Betts’ explanation for the play in the video from NESN’s “Red Sox Final” above.
