Suriname seals last spot in U-20 finals

PARAMARIBO, Suriname – Stefano Rijssel scored for his third straight game and led Suriname to a 2-1 victory over Bermuda on Sunday that gave it the final berth in the CONCACF Under-20 Championship.

Rijssel, who scored seven goals in as many games for Suriname in its Caribbean qualifying campaign, had both in Wednesday’s 2-1 victory over the Netherlands Antilles and one in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Guyana.

Rijssel’s goals in the 45th and 60th minutes rallied Suriname on Sunday after Casey Castle put Bermuda ahead in the 10th minute.

The wins finished Suriname atop its second-round qualifying group with nine points, while Bermuda, Netherlands Antilles and Guyana had three each.

Suriname joins automatic North American qualifiers Canada, Mexico and the United States, host Guatemala, Central American qualifiers, Honduras, Panama and El Salvador as well as fellow Caribbean qualifiers Cuba, Jamaica, Guadeloupe and Trinidad for the CONCACAF championship finals April 3-17.

Four teams will qualify for the Under-20 World Cup in Colombia July 20-August 20.
