MLB Postseason Picture: Red Sox Clinch AL East, Still Would Play Indians
Share this: The 2016 Major League Baseball postseason picture had one major change Wednesday night. While the Red Sox remained as the American League’s No. 2 seed after losing to the New York Yankees 5-3, Boston clinched the AL East crown thanks to the Baltimore Orioles’ comeback victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. As a result, the Red Sox, Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers all have clinched their divisions, while the Blue Jays and Orioles remained in the AL Wild Card Game. The Detroit Tigers (one game behind) and Seattle Mariners (two games behind) still have excellent chances to overtake the O’s. The divisions already are decided in the National League, too, as the Los Angeles Dodgers, Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs all have clinched.
Red Sox Notes: Boston’s Confidence Continues To Grow As Postseason Nears
Share this: Remember when Kevin Millar famously told The Boston Globe’s Dan Shaughnessy, “Don’t let (the Boston Red Sox) win today?” Well the rest of the American League East probably should re-watch “Four Days in October” right about now because Boston is leaving them all in the dust. The Red Sox are 13-5 in September after picking up their sixth straight victory Tuesday in a 5-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles, and those six straight wins have come against the New York Yankees and Orioles. That successful stretch has the Red Sox sitting pretty atop the AL East, and their magic number to clinch the division now is down to eight. They have a 91.5 percent chance to win the division, according to MLB.com, and their postseason
Eduardo Rodriguez Rebounds From Rough Start With Solid Outing Vs. Orioles
Share this: Eduardo Rodriguez’s last two starts couldn’t have been more different. Rodriguez only last 2 1/3 innings against the New York Yankees on Sept. 15, but he rebounded Tuesday with a solid outing against the Baltimore Orioles. He allowed only two earned runs on four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings in Boston’s 5-2 win over the Orioles at Camden Yards. Rick Porcello Sets Manny Machado’s Record Straight After Hit By Pitch
Share this: Rick Porcello didn’t make many mistakes Monday night, but Manny Machado clearly didn’t like one of them. Porcello pitched a brilliant outing for the Boston Red Sox, throwing just 89 pitches over nine innings to lead his team to a 5-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. The right-hander was highly efficient, walking no one while striking out seven. He temporarily lost control in the fourth inning, though, hitting Machado in the shoulder with an 0-1 fastball. Porcello had no reason to throw at Machado, but the Orioles third baseman surprisingly took offense, glaring at the Red Sox pitcher before jawing at him as he made his way down to first base. Porcello understandably was perplexed by Machado’s reaction. After
Red Sox Wrap: Boston Wastes Rick Porcello’s Gem In 1-0 Loss To Orioles
Share this: BOSTON — Rick Porcello has gotten terrific run support all year, but the law of averages caught up to him Wednesday. The Red Sox right-hander dazzled the Baltimore Orioles in a stellar outing, but Orioles starter Kevin Gausman did him one better, shutting down Boston’s bats to hand the Sox a 1-0 loss in the teams’ series finale at Fenway Park. It was an opportunity wasted for the Red Sox, as both the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees lost Wednesday. Boston now holds a one-game lead over Baltimore in the American League East. Here’s how this one went down. GAME IN A WORDDuel. Porcello and Gausman both brought their A-games, combining to allow just one run on a total of eight hits in their respective
Red Sox Notes: Boston In First-Place Tie With Blue Jays After Rout Of A’s
Share this: The Boston Red Sox demolished the Oakland Athletics on Saturday, and it earned them a share of first place in the American League East. The Toronto Blue Jays lost to the Tampa Bay Rays 7-5 while the Red Sox cruised to their third straight win in an 11-2 drubbing of the A’s. After those results, the Red Sox and Jays sit dead-even atop the AL East with 76-59 records, with the Baltimore Orioles knocking on the back door just two games behind. However, the Red Sox don’t want to celebrate just yet. The Major League Baseball schedule typically loads teams up with division games in September, and that’s no different in 2016. The Red Sox have a full slate of inter-division competition over
