Benfica and Fenerbahçe are set to meet again in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. The Turkish club have won both of their home meetings with the Eagles 1-0, but have lost by heavier margins in their previous encounters in Lisbon, most recently bowing out in the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League semi-finals.In the first round of the 1975/76 European Cup, Benfica inflicted a record 7-0 UEFA competition defeat on Fenerbahçe. Former Portuguese international Nené, who holds the record number of appearances for Benfica with 802, was one of two hat-trick scorers that night on 17 September 1975, along with Rui Jordão. Fenerbahçe and St-Étienne grabbed the spoils on a weekend of high-profile derbies against fellow UEFA Europa League hopefuls, and there were smiles too for a Manchester United team back on track. The Turkish Cup round of 16 brought a pair of UEFA Europa League sides together in Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe, and it was Fener who got the better of their Istanbul neighbours thanks to Robin van Persie's decider in a 1-0 victory. A place in the last eight proved beyond Osmanlıspor, on the other hand, as they succumbed to Kasımpaşa after extra time.

There were regrets aplenty among the UEFA Europa League contenders at the weekend as Roma and Fenerbahçe lost ground in their domestic title hunts and Anderlecht spurned the chance to go top in Belgium. Roma's pursuit of Juventus took a hit as the Giallorossi suffered a surprise 3-2 loss at Sampdoria after taking an early lead through Bruno Peres. The result left the capital side four points adrift of Juve having played one game more, while there were goals too as fellow last-32 hopefuls Fiorentina drew 3-3 at home with Genoa.

Van Persie's career comes togetherRotterdam-born Robin van Persie scored 14 goals in 61 league games for Feyenoord at the start of his career, lifting the 2002 UEFA Cup on home soil. He also struck 48 times in 86 Premier League matches during three seasons with Manchester United, with whom he landed the 2012/13 Premier League title (what's more, he hit four against them while at Arsenal, including a consolation in an 8-2 defeat in 2001).
