BU 3, BC 1: There will be a new Beanpot champion this season after No. 3 Boston University knocked No. 7 Boston College out of the 65th annual tournament with a 3-1 win. BU will face No. 4 Harvard in the title game next Monday.
Boston Bruins prospect Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson, Chad Krys and Clayton Keller were the goal scorers for the Terriers, while Austin Cangelosi scored the Eagles’ only tally.
With the win, BU improved to 19-7-2, while BC, which will face Northeastern next Monday in the consolation game, dropped to 18-10-2.
Third period, 2:44, BU 3, BC 1: This one is just about over, as BC will be a man down for the next two minutes after another Matthew Gaudreau penalty.
Third period, 6:52, BU 3, BC 1: The Eagles need a miracle, but they won’t get one here. Colin White is the latest BC player to head to the box, this time on a holding the stick call.
Third period, 11:14, BU 3, BC 1: So much for that power play. We’ll have 20 seconds of 4-on-4 play before a BU power play after Matthew Gaudreau was called for tripping.
Third period, 12:56, BU 3, BC 1: With seven seconds remaining on the power play, BU’s Kieffer Bellows was called for an interference penalty.
Third period, 14:49, BU 3, BC 1: The Eagles’ Luke McInnis was called for an elbowing penalty, which gave the Terriers yet another power play.
Third period, 17:12, BU 3, BC 1: It appeared as though BU’s Ryan Cloonan had scored, but the goal was overturned on review because BC goalie Joseph Woll already had possession of the puck.
End second period, BU 3, BC 1: The Eagles had a 19-17 advantage in shots on goal after the second period, but the Terriers’ lead still got bigger.
BU had goals from Chad Krys and Clayton Keller in the frame, while Austin Cangelosi got BC on the board. Boston College had some excellent chances, but Boston University goalie Jake Oettinger had a huge period.
Second period, 8:54, BU 3, BC 1: Clayton Keller put the Terriers back up by two on a short-handed goal. Boston Bruins prospect Charlie McAvoy got the assist.
Second period, 9:24, BU 2, BC 1: BC is back on the power play after Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson was called for holding.
Second period, 13:01, BU 2, BC 1: Don’t count out the Eagles yet. BC’s Austin Cangelosi gave his team new life with his 12th goal of the season. Matthew Gaudreau set up the goal with a crazy assist while he was on the ice in front of the net. The goal was reviewed, but it eventually was upheld.
Second period, 16:37, BU 2, BC 0: The Terriers took advantage of the power play. Chad Krys scored BU’s second goal of the night when he skated into the circle and shot one past Eagles goalie Joseph Woll. Bobo Carpenter and Dante Fabbro earned the assists.
Second period, 18:09, BU 1, BC 0: BU has the first power play of the second after Chris Calnan was sent to the box for roughing.
End first period, BU 1, BC 0: It was all Terriers in that first period. BU finished with a commanding 12-2 advantage in shots on goal, one of which was Boston Bruins prospect Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson’s 11th goal of the season.
First period, 4:00, BU 1, BC 0: And we have another penalty. This time Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson was called for holding the stick, setting up 40 seconds of 4-on-4 play before a BC power play.
First period, 5:19, BU 1, BC 0: The power play was negated quickly after Casey Fitzgerald was called for holding the stick. There will be 56 seconds of 4-on-4 play before a BU power play.
First period, 6:25, BU 1, BC 0: The Eagles have the first power play of the game thanks to Jordan Greenway’s two-minute minor for interference. This should be a good chance for BC to get its first shot on goal.
First period, 10:26, BU 1, BC 0: We have a stoppage almost midway through the first. BU has nine shots on goal, while BC has … zero.
First period, 15:31, BU 1, BC 0: Boston Bruins prospect Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson got the Terriers out to an early lead thanks to his 11th goal of the season. Patrick Harper was credited with the assist. The goal came off a rebound.
BOSTON — With all due respect to Northeastern and Harvard, the second Beanpot semifinal Monday night featuring rivals Boston University and Boston College is the headliner.
Yes, the Crimson and Huskies played one heck of a thrilling contest in Game 1, which No. 4 Harvard won 4-3, but it is must-see TV whenever BC and BU face off in college hockey.
The Terriers enter Monday’s game at TD Garden with an 18-7-2 record and are ranked No. 3 in the nation, while the Eagles are 18-9-2 and are ranked No. 7.
