On Thursday, Boston Globe sportswriter Dan Shaughnessy declared this Red Sox season “the greatest choke in baseball history.” On Wednesday night, however, he had a very different outlook on how the year would play out.”The one thing we have eliminated tonight is that the Red Sox season is not going to end,” declared Shaughnessy during NESN’s broadcast of the rain delay in the final game of the Red Sox season. “They live to play another day.”
It seemed like a safe assumption at the time that the Tampa Bay Rays would lose and at the very least, the Red Sox would have a chance at a one-game play-in game on Thursday. Unfortunately for the Red Sox, Shaughnessy was wrong.
“The Rays aren’t going to come back from 7-0,” he definitively declared. But come back they did, and so did the Orioles, and now many Red Sox fans are wondering if Shaughnessy might be responsible for jinxing the team with his comments.
