It is believed the investigation will follow claims of alleged racist abuse made by United defender Patrice Evra against Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

In a statement released late on Saturday, the FA said: “The Football Association has this evening been made aware of an incident that is alleged to have occurred during the Liverpool versus Manchester United fixture at Anfield today.

“Referee Andre Marriner was made aware of an allegation at the end of the fixture and has subsequently reported this to The FA.

“The FA will now begin making enquiries into the matter.”

Evra had earlier made the allegation in an interview with French television channel Canal+.

He said: “There are cameras, and you can see him [Suarez] say a certain word to me at least ten times. No place for that in 2011. The referee is aware of what was said.”

A Liverpool spokesman said that Suarez has “categorically denied” the allegation.
