Henrik Stenson Withdraws From The Barclays; Will His Ryder Cup Hopes Be Dashed?

The first leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs will have to go on without one of the hottest golfers on the planet right now.

Henrik Stenson, who won the British Open in July and a silver medal at the Olympics, withdrew from The Barclays at Bethpage State Park (Black) in Farmingdale, N.Y., after finishing his first round Thursday due to a right knee injury.

Little else is known about Stenson’s injury, but the 2013 FedEx Cup champion won’t have much time to recoup if he wants to compete in the Deutsche Bank Championship over Labor Day Weekend. However, Stenson currently sits in the No. 14 spot in the the FedEx Cup standings, so he could conceivably miss a few weeks and still make it to the final leg at the Tour Championship.

But making it back in time for the FedEx Cup playoffs isn’t the only concern for Stenson. We’re also just a few weeks away from the Ryder Cup, and Stenson should be one of Team Europe’s top golfers if healthy.

Patrick Reed and Martin Laird are tied for the lead after Round 1 at The Barclays.
