Report: Texas To Fire Charlie Strong As Football Coach Amid Dismal Season

Charlie Strong’s tenure as the head football coach at Texas is coming to a close.

Multiple outlets reported Sunday that the Longhorns will fire Strong, adding another low point in what has been a horrendous 2016 season for the school’s football program. Texas is 5-6 after losing to lowly Kansas on Saturday.

When exactly Strong will be fired is unknown at this time.

It’s entirely possible Strong either is fired or steps down after next Saturday’s regular-season finale against TCU. Texas needs to win that game to become bowl eligible, but there are plenty of examples of programs firing their coaches after the regular season but before their bowl game.

The university has not confirmed the rumors, but athletic director Mike Perrin did address them with a statement.

Firing Strong would be a costly decision, too, but Texas doesn’t really have to worry about money given its alumni base and other factors.

Strong took over as the Longhorns’ head coach in 2014 and has a 16-20 record in just under three full seasons. That’s not the kind of performance the school or its fans expected.

Texas has a rich football history and won 10-plus games in nine straight seasons from 2001 through 2009, a run that included a 2005 BCS national title. Texas hasn’t won 10 or more games in a single season since the end of that streak.
