Bryce Harper Tells Little Leaguers To Ignore Participation Trophies

Share this: Bryce Harper didn’t become the 2015 National League MVP by settling for anything less than first place, and he’s passing that lesson on to the next generation. The Washington Nationals star outfielder spoke to a group of Little Leaguers at an event Saturday, and he had a message that at least a few professional athletes can get behind — no participation trophies. “As much as they might tell you, ‘Oh, it’s okay you guys lost,’ but no, Johnny, no. No participation trophies, okay. First place only,” Harper said. The kids certainly seemed to appreciate the message as they started clapping. Harper is one of the best players in Major League Baseball, so perhaps he’s onto something. Thumbnail photo via Geoff Burke/USA TODAY Sports Images More Stories Source link

Floyd Mayweather Berates Conor McGregor, Wants To Make Fight Happen

The Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor super bout has shown no real signs of coming to fruition, but the two fighters never hesitate to take shots at one another. The latest soundbite came by way of Mayweather, who blasted “Notorious” for failing to stand behind his words. “Conor McGregor, stop blowing smoke up people’s ass you little (expletive),” Mayweather told FightHype, as transcribed by FOX Sports. “If you want to fight, let’s make it happen you punk. Conor McGregor you don’t even want to fight you little (expletive), you little punk. Let’s make it happen.” Both athletes have consistently broadcasted their interest in t... NESN.com

Antonio Brown Is A Good Reminder Not To Obsess Over Combine Results

Share this: The Pittsburgh Steelers determined Monday that Antonio Brown is the best wide receiver in the NFL when they handed him a four-year, $68 million contract, making him the highest-paid player at his position. This is despite the fact Brown isn’t a freak athlete. That’s not a knock against Brown. I’m not a freak athlete. Neither is Tom Brady (sure, he says he would perform better at the NFL Scouting Combine now than he did 17 years ago, but it would take him another 150 years of improvement before he reaches freak levels of athleticism, and he probably won’t be very spry at the age of 189). Many quarterbacks aren’t freak athletes yet still reach an elite level of play on the field. Wide

Sports federations face obstacles in sanctioning Russian ath…

In announcing the final revealing details of Russian state-sponsored doping in a report earlier this month, Canadian lawyer Richard McLaren was clear on his mandate — investigating Russian doping but not adjudicating it. The Herculean task of doing that now falls to the international federations (IFs), who could spend months if not years pursuing anti-doping rule violations against the hundreds of athletes involved in the Russian state-sponsored system. As those federations pursue individual cases, calls remain for a larger sanction for Russia. ”I think what will be a problem is individual cases with individuals pleading I was forced to do it or I didn’t know how it was done,” said Dionne Koller, director of the Center for Sport and the Law at the

Doping report details ‘institutional conspiracy’ in Russia

LONDON — A new report into systematic Russian doping details a wide-ranging “institutional conspiracy” that involved more than 1,000 athletes across more than 30 sports, including evidence corroborating large-scale sample swapping at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. World Anti-Doping Agency investigator Richard McLaren said Friday the conspiracy involved the Russian Sports Ministry, national anti-doping agency and the FSB intelligence service, providing further details of state involvement in a massive program of cheating and cover-ups that he said operated on an “unprecedented scale” from 2011 to 2015. “It is impossible to know just how deep and how far back this conspiracy goes,” McLaren said at a news conference in London. “For years, international sports competitions have unknowingly been hijacked by Russians. Matt Calvert Gets 36 Stitches, Later Scores Game-Winner For Blue Jackets

Share this: Hockey players often are labeled as the toughest athletes in sports, and Columbus Blue Jackets forward Matt Calvert did his best to prove that to be true in Friday’s game against the New York Rangers. It started with a blocked shot in the second period that swept him off his feet. The puck hit Calvert in the face, opening his face like a faucet and leaving a pool of blood on the ice. The wound required 36 stitches. [embedded content] He returned to the game (because he’s a hockey player) and remarkably scored scored the eventual game-winning goal for the Blue Jackets in the third period.
