David Price ended June scorching hot, but the month of July hasn’t been as kind to the Boston Red Sox left-hander. In two July starts, Price has given up 12 earned runs in eight innings. He took the loss in an 11-1 thumping at the hands of the New York Yankees to open the month. David Price looked sharp in his return to the mound. After getting scratched from his start Wednesday to undergo testing on his hand (which revealed a mild case of carpal tunnel), Price returned to pitch Saturday in the Boston Red Sox’s 5-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. In the start, the lefty struck out six while allowing two runs on five hits with three walks over 5 1/3 innings. After the game, Price indicated that he felt good and kept getting better as he continued throwing. Designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion blasted a three-run, walk-off home run in the 11th inning Tuesday night to give the Blue Jays a 5-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles in the American League Wild Card Game. And blasted might be an understatement. The ending was controversial, as the Orioles never turned to closer and Cy Young candidate Zach Britton. Instead, manager Buck Showalter, who said after the game that Britton was available, put in Ubaldo Jimenez with one out in the 11th, and he proceeded to allow two straight singles before Encarnacion’s homer.
