The Boston Red Sox will have to quickly rebound from their 6-3 loss Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Rays as they get set to welcome the National League East’s first-place squad, the Atlanta Braves, to Fenway Park on Friday. The Braves have been surprising so far this campaign, going 29-19 through their first 48 games behind a number of youngsters as well as veterans. To hear NESN’s Adam Pellerin, Lenny DiNardo and Steve Lyons talk about the season the Braves are having, check out the “NESN Sports Today” video above, presented by People’s United Bank. < !-... MLB Rumors: Reds Agree To Trade Brandon Phillips To Braves; Return ‘Minimal’
Brandon Phillips appears to be packing his bags after more than a decade in Cincinnati. The Reds have agreed to trade their longtime second baseman to the Atlanta Braves, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reported Sunday, citing a source. It’s unclear what Cincinnati will acquire in return, but FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal doesn’t expect it to be much. Rosenthal was the first to report the teams were close to a deal for Phillips, which is expected to be finalized Monday, per Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports. Phillips was a staple of the Reds’ infield for 11 seasons, earning three All-Star nods over that span as one of Cincinnati’s most dependable ... NESN.com
Marlins Beat Braves As MLB Honors Troops With Historic Game At Fort Bragg
Major League Baseball honored the troops with a special game in Fort Bragg, N.C., on Sunday. The Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves played in the first ever MLB game at a military base, and Miami came away with a 5-2 win. The Marlins broke open a scoreless game with two runs in the fifth, and they built a commanding five-run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. The Braves managed a bit of a comeback, but their efforts fell short. Adam Conley got the win for Miami, and catcher J.T. Realmuto led the way offensively with three runs, a homer and two RBIs. If you missed the game or want to relive the special event
David Price Bats Ninth In Red Sox Lineup, Looks To Rebound Vs. Braves
On paper, David Price has an undefeated record as a member of the Boston Red Sox. In reality, he’s been a bit more mediocre. Boston’s prized offseason acquisition is 2-0 this season, though the team has gone just 2-2 in games he’s pitched. Most recently, Price got knocked around for eight earned runs in just 3 2/3 innings pitched against his former Tampa Bay Rays, bloating his ERA to an ugly 7.06 through four starts. Fortunately, he gets to pitch in the National League on Tuesday against the lowly Atlanta Braves, who own baseball’s fourth-worst batting average (.227) and have scored the fewest runs (61) in the game. Only four players are ...
Red Sox Notes: Rick Porcello Helps Boston By Pitching Deep Into Win Vs. Braves
The Boston Red Sox needed a starting pitcher to turn in a quality, long start, and that’s exactly what they received from Rick Porcello on Monday night. The Red Sox right-hander tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings in Boston’s 1-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field, and it was just what the doctor ordered. “We needed a starter to go deep and he did that,” manager John Farrell said on NESN’s “Red Sox Extra Innings.” “He was in command the entire time out there. … Rick, as he’s been of late, he gets on a little bit of a roll — the rhythm, tempo of the game — he was moving along well. Reports: Justin Upton Traded To Padres; Braves Acquiring Prospects
The San Diego Padres are stocking up on outfielders. The Padres have agreed to a trade with the Atlanta Braves for outfielder Justin Upton, according to multiple reports. San Diego already acquired outfielders Matt Kemp and Wil Myers this week before landing Upton. The Braves will acquire left-hander Max Fried, second baseman Jace Peterson, third baseman Dustin Peterson and outfielder Mallex Smith, according to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman. The Padres reportedly will acquire a lower-level prospect in addition to Upton. The Padres entered this offseason in need of some offensive firepower, particularly in the outfield. Now, they have a surplus of outfielders, creating the potential for even more moves this winter. Upton, who was
