Tokyo is ready to take center stage for 2020 Olympics

By Stephen Wade AP Sports Writer RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike is preparing for a strenuous workout with the next Summer Olympics headed her way. The practice started when she received the Olympic flag Sunday in the official handover ceremony from her Rio counterpart, Mayor Eduardo Paes. “I hope the flag is not too heavy,” she joked the day before. “Although I have trained my muscles to receive it properly.” The next three Olympics are in Asian countries that have already held games: Tokyo’s Summer Games in 2020, sandwiched between Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in 2018 and in Beijing in 2022. This will come as a relief to the International Olympic Committee after two trying games in Sochi, Russia, and

Resetting Patriots’ Offensive Line With Shaq Mason, Sebastian Vollmer Sidelined

by Zack Cox on Mon, Aug 22, 2016 at 8:00AM 1,340 Share this: g On the first day of New England Patriots training camp, recently rehired offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia preached the importance of continuity within his unit. That unit now more than likely will begin the regular season without two of its five projected starters. The Boston Globe’s Jim McBride on Sunday shared some unfortunate news regarding guard Shaq Mason and tackle Sebastian Vollmer, reporting Mason is dealing with a broken hand and Vollmer likely is headed to injured reserve as he nurses an undisclosed ailment. CSNNE.com’s Tom E. Curran later reported a nagging hip injury that could sideline Vollmer for the entire season, and NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport also chimed in with a report that the 32-year-old had undergone

U.S. women win 6th consecutive basketball gold

By Doug Feinberg AP Basketball Writer RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Geno Auriemma and Diana Taurasi shared a long, emotional embrace. Mission accomplished. The dominant U.S. women’s basketball team did what was expected, winning a sixth consecutive Olympic gold medal and doing it in impressive fashion. In yet another rout, the U.S. dismantled Spain 101-72 on Saturday. Taurasi and the Americans played nearly flawless basketball in Rio, and were never challenged. They have won 49 consecutive games in the Olympics with only one of those decided by single digits. “It’s amazing isn’t it? I mean when you think, that’s 20 years of 20 years,” Auriemma said. “You know the first one was 96 and here we are 2016. It’s mindboggling when you think about it

Serbia stands in the way of U.S. quest for basketball gold

By BRIAN MAHONEY AP Basketball Writer RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — No gold, no glory. That’s the way it is for the U.S. men’s basketball team. The Americans, the standard in the sport since winning their first 63 games after it debuted 80 years ago in the Olympics, are either winners or failures. There is no celebrating silver. When they say adeus to Rio, it can be with only one thing around their necks to deem the games a success. “That’s what we came here for and we don’t want to leave with anything less than the gold medal,” forward Carmelo Anthony said. Anthony and the Americans will be playing for their third in a row Sunday when they face Serbia, a team of heroes back home

USA Men’s Basketball Team To Play Serbia In Olympic Gold Medal Game

Share this: The United States men’s basketball team was expected to make the Olympic gold medal game, but the same can’t be said for its opponent. Team USA will face Serbia with the gold medal in men’s basketball on the line Sunday at 2:45 p.m. ET. Serbia made the final after upsetting Australia 87-61 on Friday in the second semifinal game. USA won the first one 82-76 over Spain. The U.S. has played in some close contests in Rio de Janeiro so far, but one of its toughest tests surprisingly came in pool play against Serbia. Team USA managed to escape with a 94-91 win, but Serbia certainly proved a lot along the way. Still, Serbia lost three games in pool play, and it’s

U.S. considers Spain a worthy foe in basketball semis

By BRIAN MAHONEY AP Basketball Writer RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The U.S. men’s basketball team expected this. Whether it was for the gold medal, as in the last two Olympics, or just along the road to gold, the Americans figured they would see the Spanish again. “No doubt in my mind,” Kevin Durant said. Well, here they are. The world’s top teams meet again Friday in the semifinals, with Spain getting another chance to finish the job against the U.S. after being oh-so-close in the last two gold-medal games. “We’ve been battling against them for a long time,” Spain point guard Ricky Rubio said. “We’ve always come up short. It would be a dream for us to beat them. I really think we can do it,

Report: Tom Brady Missed Patriots-Bears Game After Scissors Accident

by Zack Cox on Thu, Aug 18, 2016 at 8:42PM 1,539 Share this: Tom Brady surprisingly was held out of Thursday’s preseason game between the New England Patriots and the Chicago Bears. We now know why. Brady did not play against the Bears because he “sliced his right thumb with a pair of scissors” before the game, CSNNE.com’s Tom E. Curran reported. “Apparently, Brady was trying to pry something from the bottom of his cleat prior to taking the field and sustained the cut,” Curran wrote. “It’s not known whether the cut required stitches or how long the wound will put him on the sidelines.” It was widely reported that Brady, who missed New England’s preseason opener last week, would start under center Thursday night, with
