Red Sox Notes: Joe Kelly Turns Heat Way Up In First Relief Appearance

Share this: BOSTON — A time traveler transported from the beginning of the season to Monday night’s game against the Detroit Tigers would have been quite confused by the Red Sox’s choice of pitchers. After getting six strong innings from Drew Pomeranz, acquired just 10 days ago from the San Diego Padres, manager John Farrell turned to Joe Kelly and Clay Buchholz, two pitchers who began the 2016 campaign in Boston’s starting rotation. For Kelly, Monday night marked his first relief appearance in a Red Sox uniform and first time coming out of the bullpen since 2013. The right-hander also hadn’t pitched at the major league level since Jun 1, which was evident when he entered in the seventh inning and began pumping serious

Red Sox Recall Joe Kelly From Triple-A Pawtucket To Serve As Reliever

Share this: Joe Kelly is back in the majors, albeit serving in a different role. The Boston Red Sox on Sunday recalled the 28-year-old right-hander from Triple-A Pawtucket, filling the roster spot opened up by Heath Hembree’s demotion to the PawSox. Kelly, who hasn’t pitched in a big league game since June 1, is expected to serve as a reliever for Boston, a role he hasn’t performed in the majors since the beginning of his career — his last relief appearance was on Sept. 29, 2013, with the St. Louis Cardinals. Kelly did thrive as a reliever during his recent five-game stint in Pawtucket, pitching five scoreless innings of relief in five appearances while striking out nine and walking one. Kelly has struggled as a starter

Chip Kelly, Eagles Don’t Love Sam Bradford, But That’s OK In Today’s NFL

Sam Bradford is not the quarterback of Chip Kelly’s dreams. Neither, apparently, was Nick Foles, who the Eagles traded to acquire Bradford this offseason. But according to FootballbyFootball.com‘s Matt Chatham, that could actually be a good thing. The way Chatham explains it, most players in the NFL are not the ideal player their team would live to have at that position. Accepting that fact just gives you an empowering advantage. “Contracts give players a sense of security and ‘belonging’ to an organization,” Chatham explains. “But there’s a reason contract terms don’t extend into eternity.  When there’s a better opti...

Ryan Hanigan: Joe Kelly Worked Efficiently In Win Over Yankees (Video)

After Friday night’s 19-inning marathon, the Boston Red Sox desperately needed a strong, lengthy outing from starting pitcher Joe Kelly. And Kelly delivered just that. In his 2015 debut, the right-hander pitched seven stellar innings at the Bronx, holding the New York Yankees to one hit and one run while striking out eight and walking two. Kelly, who dealt with biceps soreness in spring training, originally was expected to last just five or six innings, but needed just 93 pitches before departing after seven in Boston’s eventual 8-4 win. Kelly’s battery mate, catcher Ryan Hanigan, observed after the game that the hurler was able to ...

Bruins’ Loui Eriksson Should Remain On Line With Carl Soderberg, Chris Kelly

BOSTON — Loui Eriksson was the top candidate to replace Jarome Iginla at right wing on the Bruins’ first line to start the season, but that plan was put on hold when veteran center David Krejci was forced to miss 20 of the first 31 games because of an injury. Even though Eriksson has played well in the limited time he’s skated alongside Krejci and Milan Lucic since joining the Bruins before the 2013-14 campaign, the best place for him is with Carl Soderberg and Chris Kelly on the third line. Soderberg and Kelly have been Eriksson’s linemates for most of the season, and it’s obvious that they have developed impressive chemistry, specifically Soderberg and Eriksson. As
