Share this: Chris Sale was good Monday night against the Minnesota Twins, but he wasn’t great. The Boston Red Sox left-hander tossed 6 1/3 innings, allowing only one run on four hits with nine strikeouts. Sale didn’t face too much trouble in his outing, but a rocky start to the seventh inning forced him out of the ballgame. Heath Hembree followed Sale, and induced an inning-ending double play to get out of the seventh. Matt Barnes then hurled a flawless eighth frame in which he struck out the side, and Craig Kimbrel nailed down the victory for his 21st save of the season to ensure Boston’s 4-1 victory. After the game, Sale had high praise for Boston’s relief pitchers, not just for their performance against the

Red Sox Wrap: Mookie Betts, Drew Pomeranz Lift Boston To Win Vs. Astros
The Houston Astros have the best record in Major League Baseball, but the Boston Red Sox have Mookie Betts. And Betts was the difference Friday night in Game 1 of the three-game series at Minute Maid Park. Betts’ solo home run in the top of the eighth inning lifted the Red Sox to a 2-1 win over the Astros, and the right fielder also scored the Sox’s other run and saved one with his arm. Drew Pomeranz, meanwhile, had a strong outing on the mound against the best team in baseball. With the win, Boston improves to 38-29, while Houston falls to 45-23. Here’s how it all went down. GAME IN A WORDMookie.
Red Sox Notes: Short Outings Becoming Common Occurrence For Drew Pomeranz
Share this: The hope for a starting pitcher is to go deep into a ballgame and put your team in good position to win. Unfortunately for the Boston Red Sox, Drew Pomeranz hasn’t able to do that very often in the 2017 season. Pomeranz struggled through another short outing Friday night in the Red Sox’s 8-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park. The left-hander only lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits with two walks. Since Boston traded for Pomeranz at the MLB All-Star break last season, the 28-year-old hasn’t been much of an innings eater. The lefty employs a rather slow pace on the mound and often tries to dance around the strike zone with off-speed pitches
Tom Brady Could Have Been One Of MLB’s Greatest Catchers, Ex-GM Claims
Share this: Tom Brady has made a remarkable living delivering strikes to receivers. But what if his intended targets were shortstops and second basemen instead of NFL pass-catchers? The New England Patriots quarterback, as some already know, was a stud baseball player at Junipero Serra High School in addition to excelling at football. In fact, Brady was so prolific on the diamond as a left-handed hitting catcher that he actually was drafted by a Major League Baseball team. Exactly 22 years ago Friday, the Montreal Expos selected Brady in the 18th round of the 1995 MLB Draft. So, what did the Expos see in Brady? A heck of a lot, according to Montreal’s general manager at the time, Kevin Malone. “I think he could
Red Sox Notes: Rick Porcello Still In Search Of Dominant Form Early On
Share this: On most nights, what Rick Porcello gave the Boston Red Sox wouldn’t have been enough. The reigning American League Cy Young winner gave up five runs (four earned) on a season-high 11 hits during the Red Sox’s 11-6 win over the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park. Porcello hasn’t been able to find the form that propelled him to the prestigious award last season, as his ERA now stands at 4.35 after Tuesday’s mediocre showing. The right-hander’s season stats mirror his career averages, which are a far cry from the dominant 2016 season that Porcello put together. His career ERA of 4.20 is just a shade under his season ERA, while his home runs per nine innings (1.6), Fielding Independent Pitching (3.94) and his
2018 NHL Winter Classic Pits Rangers Vs. Sabres At Citi Field On Jan. 1
Share this: The NHL will feature an Empire State rivalry in the 2018 Winter Classic. The New York Rangers will play the Buffalo Sabres on New Year’s Day at Citi Field — the home of Major League Baseball’s New York Mets. The league made the announcement Tuesday night. It’s the 10th anniversary of the Winter Classic. The first one was held at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo in 2008, where the Sabres lost in a shootout to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 2018 game will be the sixth hosted by an MLB stadium. The Rangers also have made one Winter Classic appearance. They beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 at Citizens Bank Park in 2012. Umpire CB Bucknor Nearly Ruined Nats-Braves Game With Horrible Call
Share this: Bad umpiring is nothing new for CB Bucknor, but he outdid even himself Tuesday night. The Washington Nationals were up 3-1 on the Braves in Atlanta in the bottom of the ninth inning when reliever Shawn Kelley came in to try to get the Nats out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam. Kelley got Braves left fielder Emilio Bonifacio on a flyout, and the right-hander seemed to strike out third baseman Chase d’Arnaud swinging in the next at-bat. It was a wide miss, but Bucknor apparently thought he caught a piece of it and called it a foul tip after convening with the rest of the umpires. That wasn’t even Bucknor’s only bad call of the night, as he whiffed on calling Nats left
