American Pole Vaulter Halts Attempt When Star-Spangled Banners Starts Playing
Share this: Sam Kendricks, a second lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve, was competing in the pole vault last week when midway through one of his attempts, the star-spangled banner from a medal ceremony happening on the other side of the stadium started playing. In a show of patriotism for his country and respect for his fellow athletes, Kendricks stopped competing once he heard the national anthem. He put his hand over his heart and didn’t resume his attempt until the anthem finished. Kendricks finished third in the men’s pole vault final, earning himself a bronze medal. It was Team USA’s first pole vaulting medal at the Olympics in 12 years. Thumbnail photo via Eric Seals/USA TODAY Sports Images More Stories Source link
Olympic Games Rio 2016: Officials Lose Keys To Stadium, Had To Use Bolt Cutters
Share this: Things in Rio de Janeiro aren’t off to a hot start ahead of the official opening to the 2016 Summer Olympics, and they reached an almost comical peak Wednesday. While the Olympics kick off with the opening ceremonies Friday, women’s soccer got an early start with its preliminary round Wednesday. Brazil had the honor of christening Olympic Stadium with a match against China, but there was just one little problem. Rio officials lost the keys to one of the gates. Compared to concerns about Zika virus and water contaminated with human waste that’s almost sure to get athletes sick, though, losing a key is nothing. Plus, the host country ended up earning a 3-0 win, so you win some, you lose some, we guess. Thumbnail photo via Geoff
How Brazil Lost To Peru At Gillette Stadium, Flamed Out Of Copa America 2016
FOXBORO, Mass. — The biggest of controversies cost Brazil its life at Copa America 2016. Peru defeated Brazil 1-0 on Sunday at Gillette Stadium, leap-frogging the soccer giant into second place in Group B at Copa America 2016. The result gave Peru a place in the quarterfinal and sent Brazil out of the tournament in a flash. The result will surpsise most but the circumstances are even more shocking than the outcome. Peru’s Raul Ruidiaz used his hand in the 75th minute to score the winning goal, but referee Andres Cunha and his assistants inexplicable missed the infraction and awarded Peru the most dubious, and important, goal of the tournament to da...
