Tiger Woods hysteria resumes this week on the PGA Championship, within the wake of his extensively proclaimed ‘‘greatest comeback in sports history’’ final month on the Masters. I'm going to say this one time and one time solely, and I'm going to be very, very, very, very, very clear about it: It was not the best comeback in sports activities historical past. Alas, it is just the second-greatest comeback in golf historical past, perhaps the fifth-greatest comeback in sports activities historical past and possibly not among the many 25,000 biggest comebacks in human historical past. Let’s begin with golf comebacks. Tiger Woods: Marital and again issues. Goes 11 years between main titles. Ben Hogan: Near-fatal automotive accident —

Red Sox Notes: David Price Dialed In For Boston’s Slim 1-0 Victory Over Tigers
David Price had a strong outing Friday night at Comerica Park. The Red Sox starting pitcher tossed 6 1/3 innings of scoreless ball, giving up four hits and striking out five in Boston’s 1-0 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. The southpaw got himself into quite the conundrum in the fourth, after retiring the first nine batters he faced, when he loaded the bases with nobody out. Thankfully, Price made it out of the inning unscathed. “I was definitely happy,” Price said of getting out of the inning, as seen on NESN’s postgame coverage. “It was a little bit kind of self-induced, so I wasn’t too happy about that. But that was... NESN.com
Tigers’ Ron Gardenhire Wasn’t Amused By Red Sox Fans’ Cell Phone Light Show
Red Sox manager Alex Cora found humor in fans at Fenway Park shining their cell phone lights Wednesday night while the Tigers batted in the seventh inning of Boston’s 7-1 win over Detroit. Tigers skipper Ron Gardenhire wasn’t as amused by the fans’ antics, though, and wondered after the game why the umpires didn’t intervene sooner. “You ever tried to hit with a light like that in your face? It’s not supposed to happen,” Gardenhire told reporters, per ESPN.com. “The umpires should have, in my opinion, stopped it right away. They see it happen — it’s right in dead center field. “The fans are just having fun. I get it. But ... NESN.com
MLB Rumors: Astros, Mystery Team Pursuing Tigers’ Justin Verlander
The Major League Baseball season has reached the stretch run, and teams still have a short amount of time to add keys players that can help them clinch their spot in the postseason. Justin Verlander is by far the most intriguing name out there, and he just might be moved before the Aug. 31 deadline. MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reported Tuesday, citing sources, that “trade interest in Verlander has increased this week,” with the Houston Astros and one unknown suitor in the hunt. There is no doubt the Detroit Tigers ace could help a team like the Astros once they reach October, but the question is whether or not they are willing to pay
Red Sox Notes: Rick Porcello OK After Near-Collision With Tigers Coach
The Boston Red Sox have enough ailing players to fill an infirmary ward, and Rick Porcello nearly joined the walking wounded Sunday. The Red Sox starter had just allowed his third run of the afternoon in the fourth inning when he nearly collided with Detroit Tigers third base coach Dave Clark while running behind the base to back up a potential throw to third. Porcello landed awkwardly and came up holding his left leg in a limp. (Click on the photo below to see a video of the play.)
Red Sox Wrap: Boston’s Comebacks Go For Naught In 9-8 Loss To Tigers
Share this: BOSTON — The Red Sox have had trouble getting their hitting and pitching on the same page lately. On the heels of Monday night’s 4-2 loss, the Red Sox’s offense came up big Tuesday at Fenway Park with eight runs on eight hits. But that still wasn’t enough, as the Detroit Tigers roughed up starter Steven Wright for eight runs and squeaked an extra run off Boston’s bullpen to hand the Sox a 9-8 defeat. Boston has lost four of its last five games, and all of those losses have been by two runs or fewer. Here’s how this one went down. GAME IN A WORDSlugfest. Red Sox Wrap: Drew Pomeranz’s Solid Start Not Enough In Loss To Tigers
Share this: BOSTON — Drew Pomeranz’s second appearance with the Red Sox was the polar opposite of his debut, in more ways than one. The All-Star left-hander delivered a strong performance Monday night at Fenway Park, but this time, his offense couldn’t hold up its end of the bargain, plating just two runs in a 4-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Boston now has lost three of its last four games. Here’s how this one went down. GAME IN A WORDSlip. The Red Sox struck first, but their tenuous 1-0 lead fell apart late, as Boston allowed four runs over the final four innings to let this one get away.
