Isaiah Thomas soon will return to the NBA court bearing that familiar chip on his shoulder. As he nears his comeback from a long-term hip injury, the Cleveland Cavaliers guard gave a candid interview Tuesday with ESPN’s Rachel Nichols, in which he vowed to silence doubters and earn the lucrative contract he wants. Thomas also revealed the extent of the grudge he still bears against the Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge for sending him to the Cavs last summer in a blockbuster trade for Kyrie Irving. Thomas might make his Cleveland debut against the Celtics on Jan. 3 at TD Garden. Thumbnail photo via YouTube/ES... NESN.com

Giancarlo Stanton’s Agent: Red Sox Never Were Presented As Trade Option
We might never know whether Giancarlo Stanton would have accepted a trade to the Boston Red Sox. According to Stanton’s agent, Joel Wolfe, the Red Sox never were presented as a possible trade destination for the All-Star outfielder during the Miami Marlins’ negotiations. Stanton, of course, waived his no-trade clause to join the New York Yankees, who officially introduced him Monday during a news conference at the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings in Orlando, Fla. This seemingly would explain why the Red Sox weren’t really linked to Stanton during his final days with the Marlins. It’s somewhat surprising, though, as Boston could use... NESN.com

Mike Tomlin Has Cryptic Response About Martavis Bryant’s Future With Steelers
It doesn’t seem like Martavis Bryant and the Pittsburgh Steelers are anywhere close to mending fences. The fourth-year wide receiver has been frustrated with his role in the Steelers’ offense this season and reportedly requested a trade out of Pittsburgh. Bryant’s reported trade request apparently didn’t go over too well with the Steelers, as he was benched for the team’s “Sunday Night Football” game against the Detroit Lions. Following Pittsburgh’s 20-15 win, head coach Mike Tomlin wasn’t very interested in divulging into Bryant’s inactivity and also wasn’t willing to commit to the 25-year-old being in the Steelers’ plans mov... NBA Twitter Had Jokes After Kyrie Irving Trade Finally Was Completed
After more than a week, the deal finally is done. The Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers reportedly finalized their megadeal Wednesday that will send Kyrie Irving to Boston in exchange for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, the Brooklyn Nets’ 2018 first-round draft pick and a 2020 second-round pick. And that last part is what all the hold up was about. As you probably know, the deal hit a snag when the Cavs were alarmed by Thomas’ nagging right hip injury and demanded more compensation. And after a few days of posturing and negotiations, the 2020 second-round pick, which originally belonged to the Miami Heat, is what got the deal do... NESN.com
Celtics’ Final Haul From 2013 Nets Trade Truly Is A Sight To Behold
Of all the crazy ramifications of Tuesday’s blockbuster trade between the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers, here’s one that might get overlooked: The Celtics no longer have a vested interest in the failure of the Brooklyn Nets. The Celtics acquired Kyrie Irving from the Cavs by dealing Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and the Nets’ 2018 first-round draft pick. That Nets pick was Boston’s final direct asset from its 2013 mega deal with Brooklyn that sent Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett out of town — a trade that’s widely regarded as one of the most lopsided in NBA history. Just how lopsided, you ask? With the book officially closed ... NESN.com
Red Sox Notes: Eduardo Nunez, Rafael Devers Exceeding Expectations For Boston
The Boston Red Sox struggled mightily upon returning from the Major League Baseball All-Star break, and a lack of offense was one of the primary reasons why. The Red Sox simply couldn’t string multiple hits together, and scored three runs or less in seven of their first 14 games after the break. But the Red Sox’s bats suddenly have found a spark, in large part due to a 20-year-old prospect and a player acquired via trade that went fairly under the radar. Rafael Devers and Eduardo Nunez both have been red hot since arriving to Boston, and have helped the Sox post a three-game winning streak, with the latest victory coming in Thursday
