Red Sox Wrap: All-Around Rough Pitching Gives Boston 11-9 Loss To Twins

Share this: BOSTON — Saturday’s Red Sox game against the Minnesota Twins certainly didn’t unfold the way anyone expected it to. After high winds made for a bad start for both teams, the Red Sox seemed to have plenty of cushion with an 8-5 lead going into the seventh inning. However, some bad relief performances put the Twins ahead 10-8, and they never let go of the lead en route to an 11-9 win over Boston. Here’s how it all went down. GAME IN A WORDLong. Besides the actual time of game, this contest really felt like two games in one. The score was 6-4 Red Sox in just the second inning thanks in part to some intense winds swirling at Fenway Park. But when they

Mookie Betts Out Of Red Sox’s Lineup Vs. Twins; Michael Martinez Starts In RF

Share this: BOSTON — Mookie Betts is getting his first day off  for the Red Sox this season. The right fielder exited Friday night’s game against the Minnesota Twins in the top of the fifth inning with knee soreness and is still considered day-to-day going forward. Utility man Michael Martinez will start in right for Betts on Saturday and bat ninth after going 1-for-2 with two great catches as his replacement in Friday’s 2-1 loss. Travis Shaw also is getting a breather in Boston’s third game against the Twins, and Aaron Hill will play third base and bat seventh. Left fielder Brock Holt is the leadoff hitter in Betts’ absence, too. David Price is on the mound for the Red Sox, and he’ll be looking to

Red Sox Notes: Top Half Of Boston’s Lineup Explodes In 13-2 Drubbing Of Twins

Share this: BOSTON — The Red Sox piled on the Minnesota Twins on Thursday to the tune of 13 runs, and nearly 70 percent of them were driven in by the first four batters in Boston’s lineup. Mookie Betts, Dustin Pedroia, Xander Bogaerts and David Ortiz went a combined 14-for-19 (.737) with 10 runs, nine RBIs, two home runs and four doubles split among them. And needless to say, Red Sox manager John Farrell was pretty pleased with what he saw. “The top half of the lineup was outstanding,” Farrell said after the 13-2 win. “(Pedroia), five hits, you don’t see very often. Mookie, as I mentioned, the way he’s going right now — the month of July has been a very good offensive

Ryan Hanigan Catching For Steven Wright In Red Sox-Twins Series Opener

BOSTON — The Red Sox are coming off a two-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants, and now it’s Steven Wright’s turn to keep up Boston’s winning ways. The knuckleballer will be on the mound Thursday for the first contest of the Red Sox’s four-game series against the Minnesota Twins. Wright has had a little bit of trouble in July so far, putting up a 6.35 ERA in three starts, but he still earned the win in each of those games. His 2.78 ERA also is second in the American League behind the Cleveland Indians’ Danny Salazar. Ryan Hanigan will catch for Wright to give Sandy Leon a day off, as the two backstops have been following a two games on, two games

It was another hit parade at Fenway Park for the Boston Red Sox on Thursday, and Mookie Betts was a big reason why. Twins Releasing David Ortiz ‘Boston’s Gain’: ‘It Was A Mistake,’ GM Says

It might have been the single greatest stroke of luck in Boston sports history. For Minnesota Twins general manager Terry Ryan, however, releasing David Ortiz 14 years ago is a nightmare he’s embracing. “There’s no hiding that one,” Ryan told Twins.com’s Rhett Bollinger recently. “You can put that one in there and lock it down. I’m not running from it. I’m proud of what he’s done. Obviously, it was a mistake. The guy has been a great representation of the Boston Red Sox and Major League Baseball for a long time. And it’s Boston’s gain and Minnesota’s loss. And I take full responsibility.” Though Ortiz’s struggles throu...
