The Daily Show and Jon Stewart just seem to have a way of breaking issues down to their most basic points, or finding examples of hypocrisy and shining a light on them. On Thursday night’s episode, the NCAA was firmly in their sights.
Correspondent Asif Mandvi profiled University of Minnesota wrestler Joel Bauman, who’s NCAA eligibility was revoked after he published a rap song under his own name. According to NCAA rules, student athletes are not allowed to profit from their names in any way.
The segment contrasts Bauman’s plight with that of former UCLA basketball player Ed O’Bannon, who is suing the NCAA for using his likeness in the EA Sports video game NCAA Basketball 09.
