Shane Lowry has said he achieved much of what he wanted in 2014, but rued “one that got away” at the BMW Championship at Wentworth in May.
The Offaly man, speaking in an extended interview with RTÉ Sport, has been reflecting on his year and believes there were a lot of positives to take from the season.
His biggest regret, however, is failing to finish a weekend as a winner and admitted that the final holes at Wentworth, where he finished second behind Rory McIlroy, stand out the most.
“A lot of things I wanted to do it 2014, I did them,” said Lowry.
“The one thing I didn’t do, which I really wanted to, was win.
“That is probably the only thing the season was missing. I had some very bad times at the start of the year and from May onwards I played good golf.
“I was contending in a lot of weeks and giving myself chances to do well. I’ve had a good finish to the season and a great start for next year planned.
“Personally I look back on that [BMW Championship] now, and I actually watched it at home a few weeks ago, I look back on it as one that got away.
“It definitely feels like that. It was great to do what I did there when I needed to play well. I was hoping for top 10 or 15 finish. I was three shots ahead with seven holes to play in the tournament.
“I made double [bogey] on the next and Rory hit a birdie straight away. It was back to all-square and I felt I didn’t get the breaks coming in that I needed to win.
“It was one that got away but holing that putt at the last was worth an awful lot. You can look at it both ways. It was a great tournament but it was one that got away as well.”
Lowry also spoke about breaking into the top 50 in the world and an upcoming first appearance at the Masters next year.
“It is an exciting time. I’ve sat down and worked out my schedule. I’m going to be playing a lot in America,” he said.
“Leading up to the Masters, I’m probably going to play three or four events in America and one in March. I’ll go over to America three weeks before the Masters and play in the Valero Texas Open.
“I’ve a week off in America to practice and I plan to play a couple of practice rounds. My Dad and brother will come over [for the Masters] and it’ll be nice. It’ll be a good week.”
