Aurora fireplace: Dog, cats die in fireplace on Lilac Lane

A canine and several other cats died, and a firefighter used to be injured, remaining Friday in an condo fireplace in west suburban Aurora.

Crews spoke back to a hearth alarm about 9:30 a.m. at a three-story development within the 2100 block of Lilac Lane, Aurora Fire Department Battalion Chief Jim Rhodes stated in an emailed commentary.

Firefighters discovered smoke coming from a locked second-floor condo, Rhodes stated. Crews broke down the door and rescued a canine and greater than 10 cats.

“Unfortunately, the dog and a few cats were deceased, and animal control was called to the scene to assist,” Rhodes stated.

The second-floor condo used to be deemed uninhabitable, he stated. There used to be about $20,000 in injury.

One firefighter had a “minor injury” and is anticipated to get better, Rhodes stated. The reason behind the fireplace is beneath investigation.
