Saturday has been quite the day in college football, to say the least.
While much of the attention has been on the Texas coaching carousel and the instant classic between Ohio State and Michigan, the LSU Tigers also made a big move by lifting the interim tag off Ed Orgeron and making him the permanent head football coach.
“This is a great day for LSU and for all of Louisiana,” vice chancellor and director of athletics Joe Alleva said, via LSUSports.net. “We got our man and he’s been here all along. Coach Orgeron has demonstrated his ability to run this program with excellence, even under difficult circumstances. Coach ‘O’ earned this job.
“I worked closely with (LSU) President Alexander and board leadership throughout a very deliberate process. By the end of that process, our decision was clear. Coach Orgeron took us step by step through every aspect of his plans for this program and there was no question that he is the man to lead LSU football.”
The Louisiana native has been with LSU since 2015, and he took over as interim head coach in September after Les Miles was fired. LSU went 5-2 under Orgeron, including a Thanksgiving win over Texas A&M.
“My goal is to build a championship program fast, very fast,” Orgeron said, via ESPN.com’s David Ching. “I understand the expectations at LSU and I invite them because I have the same expectations of myself and my staff.”
Orgeron has experience coaching in the SEC, as he was the lead man at Ole Miss from 2005-07. He later served as the interim coach for Southern California in 2013.
