No. 16 UMBC Pulls Off Historic Upset, Beats No. 1 Virginia In NCAA Tournament

The Retrievers are making history.

Tasked with top-seeded Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, University of Maryland, Baltimore County stunned the Cavaliers with a 74-54 upset. The win marked the first time in tournament history that the 16th-seeded team knocked off the top-seeded team.

Virginia’s calling card long had been its defense, but it simply had no answer for the Retrievers’ fast-paced offense, which shot 26-for-48 from the field, hitting 12 of their 24 3-point attempts. UMBC senior guard Jarius Lyles simply ran over Virginia — who entered the game 31-2 — dropping 28 points and cruising into the lane with ease.
