Reigning WEC Driver’s Champion Mark Webber To Retire After 2016 Season

It looks like Tony Stewart and Felipe Massa aren’t the only big-name drivers hanging up their helmets after this season.

After 18 years, former Formula One driver and reigning WEC driver’s champion Mark Webber has announced he will retire from professional racing, according to Porsche.

Once the 2016 WEC season concludes, the Aussie will step into a new role with Porsche as a brand ambassador and motorsport consultant.

“I have arrived where I belong,” Webber said in a statement. “Porsche is the brand I always loved most and the one that suits me the best. The 911 is iconic — it has got elegance, performance and understatement, and is never intrusive. It is just the right car for every scenario.”

Over the course of his career in F1 and WEC, Webber has amassed 16 race wins, 20 pole positions and 54 podiums, including P2 in the 2015 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Webber says the intensity of competing in two of the fastest categories in all of motorsport is something he will miss.

“I will miss the sheer speed, downforce and competition, but I want to leave on a high and I’m very much looking forward to my new tasks.”

We hope the fact that Webber is no longer racing means we will get to see him conduct more F1 podium interviews, because whenever he does, he always puts on a show.
