NCAA Tournament: Hockey East Goes Winless In Friday Early Games (Videos)

The NCAA Men’s Hockey Tournament kicked off Friday, but it was a disappointing day for several hockey east schools. No. 4 seed Northeastern kicked off its first appearance in the tourney since 2009 following a historic 20-1-2 late-season run that ended with them winning the Hockey East Tournament. The Huskies got off to a quick start, too, as freshman Nolan Stevens potted the first goal of the game just 3:07 into the first. But Northeastern’s Cinderella run was cut short soon after, as No. 1 North Dakota scored five unanswered goals en route to an eventual 6-2 win. Things went slightly better for No. 3 Notre Dame, who took No. 2 Michigan to

Bruins Notes: B’s Reverse Third-Period Curse, Leapfrog Canadiens In East

by Zack Cox on Sat, Jan 16, 2016 at 8:00AM 1,147 For the first time all season, the Montreal Canadiens are looking up at the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference standings. The Bruins’ 4-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night allowed them to leapfrog the idle Habs, who were the East’s top team for the first month of the season but have lost 14 of their last 18 games. Friday’s contest was as close to a must-win for the Bruins as a mid-January game can get. The B’s had dr...

Albany stuns on late 3 to win America East

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Peter Hooley hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key on the final shot of the game, giving Albany a stunning 51-50 victory over Stony Brook on Saturday to win the America East tournament title for the third straight year. The Great Danes (24-8) are 5-0 in the title game, including a 69-60 on the road last year over the Seawolves (23-11), who remained winless in four tries in the championship game. This couldn't have been scripted better. Hooley missed eight games in the middle of the regular season to return to his native Australia to be with his dying mother. The team has worn "SH" patches on their left shoulders in honor of Sue

Hockey East Roundup: Vermont Survives No. 10 BC In 3-2 Overtime Win

It took a miracle for Boston College to reach overtime, but in the extra period, its luck finally ran out. Freshman forward Alex Tuch scored for the No. 10 Eagles (17-10-2) with 9.6 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime, but Vermont forward Anthony Petruzzelli scored 1:47 into added time to help the No. 17 Catamounts (17-10-2) escape with a dramatic 3-2 win Friday night at Kelley Rink. The contest between two ranked teams was a back-and-forth affair from the start, as both squads traded goals in the first period. Vermont took a 2-1 lead in the second period with a goal off the stick of forward Kevin Irwin, and that lead would

BYU won’t join Big East for football (AP)

Brigham Young won’t be part of the Big East’s westward expansion. Negotiations between the rebuilding conference and BYU have broken off, a person familiar with the talks told The Associated Press. The person spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the conference and school have not been making their talks public. “BYU to the Big East is dead. It’s not going to happen,” the person said. BYU athletic department spokesman Brett Pyne said in an email that school officials declined a request for comment. The Big East was trying to add BYU as part of its plan to become a 12-team football league. The deal-breaker was television rights. The person says BYU wanted to retain the rights to its home football games and the league

ACC adds Pitt, Syracuse from Big East (AP)

The Atlantic Coast Conference has extended its northern reach, adding Pittsburgh and Syracuse. Now the question becomes, will the league stop there— or keep growing to 16? The ACC announced Sunday that its council of presidents unanimously voted to accept those two schools, a move that increases its membership to 14 and sends the Big East scrambling—again—to replace two of its cornerstone programs. “We are constantly evaluating the competitive landscape to ensure the conference’s viability for years to come, and this, I believe, has staying power,” ACC Commissioner John Swofford said on a conference call.
