How Undersized Mookie Betts Has Become One Of MLB’s Best Power Hitters

Share this: The Boston Red Sox’s best power hitter has clubbed home runs at a prolific rate this season. The craziest part? He’s six inches shorter and 50 pounds lighter than David Ortiz. We’re talking, of course, about Mookie Betts, the Red Sox’s All-Star right fielder whose size belies his surprising pop. Standing at just 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, Betts leads the team with 28 home runs, five of which he’s clubbed in Boston’s last four games. His power numbers through Wednesday — 89 RBIs, .572 slugging percentage, .930 OPS — rank right up there with the game’s biggest sluggers, and he leads MLB with 67 extra-base hits. So, how does a guy who’d blend in at your local grocery store generate as much power

Klay Thompson leads U.S. hoops to 100-97 win over France

By Brian Mahoney AP Basketball Writer RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Three wins from gold, and still no reason to think it will be easy for the U.S. men’s basketball team. Klay Thompson ended an Olympic-long slump with seven 3-pointers and 30 points, and the Americans needed almost all of them to hold off France 100-97 on Sunday. The U.S. won its 50th straight tournament game, but the last three have been nothing like most of the previous 47. Winning by three for the second consecutive game, the U.S. improved to 5-0 and clinched first place in Group A. The Americans open quarterfinal play Wednesday, still the favorite but looking as beatable as ever under Mike Krzyzewski. Their opponents couldn’t be determined until the completion of

Dustin Pedroia Having Dominant 2016 Season For Red Sox Thanks To Health

Share this: Dustin Pedroia hasn’t really gotten much of the spotlight for the Boston Red Sox this season, but it’s not because he hasn’t been performing. On the contrary, the second baseman has been flying under the radar, batting .307 heading into Monday’s game against the Cleveland Indians with 12 home runs, 53 RBIs and 77 runs. And one reason is because Pedroia is fully healthy this season. Pedroia tore the UCL in his thumb on Opening Day in 2013 and got surgery on it after the Red Sox won that year’s World Series. His production went down in 2014 as he recovered, and in 2015, he strained his hamstring and played in just 93 games. But now that he’s not nursing any

Patriots Joint Practice Notes: Training Camp Fight Nothing New For Bears

by Zack Cox on Mon, Aug 15, 2016 at 7:42PM 1,734 Share this: FOXBORO, Mass. — The mildest of mid-practice altercations is cause for alarm in New England Patriots training camp. That apparently is not the case out in Chicago. The Patriots and Bears engaged in several post-whistle skirmishes during Monday’s joint practice, including one sparked by Malcolm Butler and Alshon Jeffery that featured more than a dozen participants from each side. While not a full-on brawl, it was by far the biggest fight of the the Patriots offseason, which before Monday had only featured a scrap between center Bryan Stork and defensive lineman Woodrow Hamilton during organized team activities. The Bears, on the other hand, reportedly have sparred quite reguarly during their training camp — so much so that

Drew Pomeranz Looks To Help Red Sox By Pitching Deeper Into Games

Share this: Drew Pomeranz was by no means lights out Wednesday against the New York Yankees, but he did have one of his better outings in a Boston Red Sox uniform. Pomeranz lasted 5 1/3 innings in Wednesday’s 9-4 loss to the New York Yankees at Fenway Park, but the Boston Red Sox left-hander only allowed one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts. However, the bullpen had to pick up the workload from there, and things didn’t go well for Matt Barnes, Fernando Abad, Junichi Tazawa, Robbie Ross Jr. and Co. Hear what Pomeranz had to say about his performance in the video from “Red Sox Final” above. Thumbnail photo via Bob DeChiara/USA TODAY Sports Images More Stories Source link
