The Boston Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles 8-1 on Tuesday night at Fenway Park in part due to a stellar performance by catcher Christian Vazquez. Vazquez got the start behind the plate over teammate Sandy Leon and provided a stellar performance calling the game behind the plate and at the plate, too. Vazquez went 4 for 4 with a two singles, a double, a triple and two RBIs in the win. The Red Sox are getting terrific offensive production from their defensive-minded catchers this season. A Mark Teixeira ninth-inning grand slam lifted the Yankees to a 5-3 walk-off win, but as Red Sox manager John Farrell told his players in the clubhouse after the loss, that doesn’t take away from their accomplishment of winning the American League East. And Red Sox chairman Tom Werner echoed those words to NESN’s Gary Striewski. “It’s always great to win in New York, and what a crazy last inning that was,” Werner said, as aired on “Red Sox Final.” “As John Farrell said, one inning can’t take away from what’s been a... Mookie Betts Explains What Happened On Wild Catch-Turned-Double Play
Share this: Mookie Betts made one of the weirder plays of the season Tuesday night in the Bronx. It was also one of the most impressive. The Boston Red Sox’s right fielder lost a liner off the bat of Chase Headley in the Yankee Stadium lights and went into his slide a bit prematurely. He somehow managed to reach across and over his body and make the catch anyway before jumping up and quickly doubling off Starlin Castro at first base. It wasn’t enough to win the game, though, as the Red Sox had their 11-game winning streak snapped in a 6-4 loss to the New York Yankees. Still, it was pretty impressive nonetheless.
