Semyon Varlamov’s Shaky Start To Season Costing Avalanche Out Of Gates

Share this: The Colorado Avalanche have struggled scoring goals this season, but even if they could score that might not be enough to overcome Semyon Varlamov’s awful start. The Avalanche goalie is 3-6-0 with a putrid 3.47 goals against average and .882 save percentage. Meanwhile, His backup, Calvin Pickard, has done much better with a 3-1-0 record, 2.08 goals against average and .923 save percentage. Hear NESN’s Dale Arnold and Billy Jaffe break down the Avalanche’s goalie woes ahead of their game Sunday against the Boston Bruins in the video from “Bruins Face-Off Live” above. Petrosyan installed as new Armenia boss

Artur Petrosyan has been named as the new coach of Armenia, replacing Varuzhan Sukiasyan, who resigned six days ago, his side having lost their first three European qualifiers by an aggregate score of 8-1.Now 44, Petrosyan was one of Armenia's top players in the late 1990s and early 2000s, amassing 69 caps and scoring 11 goals – a national record which Manchester United FC's Henrikh Mkhitaryan has since broken. He worked as assistant to Bernard Challandes during the Swiss coach's time as Armenia boss, and said of his new appointment: "I am happy to have been entrusted with leading the national side."

Bruins’ Offense Was Terrific, But Tuukka Rask Won Monday’s Game For Boston

Share this: The Boston Bruins took home a decisive 4-1 victory Monday night, and while the offense should be noted in a balanced scoring attack, it’s Tuukka Rask who should make all the headlines. Boston’s goaltender stopped 34 of 35 shots he faced and kept the Winnipeg Jets scoreless on five power play attempts while Boston struggled to get moving. And the cherry on top? Rask recorded two assists — the most he’s scored in a season since 2013-14 and one shy of tying his career high for a single season. B’s coach Claude Julien joined NESN’s Jack Edwards and Andy Brickley following Monday’s road win to discuss Rask’s impact on the game, among other things. Check it out in the video above. Thumbnail

Bruins’ Brandon Carlo On Scoring First NHL Goal: ‘I Kind Of Blacked Out’

Share this: There’s nothing like scoring your first NHL goal. Unfortunately for Brandon Carlo, he might have to watch it on tape forever like the rest of us. The Boston Bruins’ rookie defenseman lit the lamp for the first time in his NHL career during Monday’s 4-1 road victory over the Winnipeg Jets, and he caught up with NESN’s Sarah Davis for a pretty terrific post game interview to discuss his milestone accomplishment. Spoiler alert: He was so excited he can hardly even remember it happening. Check out what Carlo and teammate David Pastrnak had to say about their performances in the above video from “NESN Sports Today,” presented by People’s United Bank. Liverpool Overruns Hull City 5-1 In Five-Star Premier League Win

Share this: Liverpool produced a stunning attacking display to thrash Hull City 5-1 on Saturday at Anfield and make it four wins on the spin in all competitions. Adam Lallana opened the scoring early in the first half before James Milner netted from the spot after Ahmed Elmohamady received a red card for stopping Philippe Coutinho’s shot on the line with his arm. Sadio Mane extended his incredible start to the season with another goal before the break, though the visitors pulled one back in the second period through David Meyler’s close-range finish. That blow mattered little in the end, though, as Coutinho’s fine curler quickly restored the Reds’ advantage and Milner bagged another penalty to add gloss to the scoreline. 76ers Prospect Russ Smith Breaks D-League Scoring Record, Loses Anyway (Videos)

It’s arguably the most Philadelphia 76ers story ever: Sixers prospect Russ Smith, currently playing for the Delaware 87ers, broke the NBA D-League scoring record with 65 points against the Canton Charge on Wednesday, yet his team lost by 11 points. Smith managed just four assists in the loss (despite averaging eight per game) while adding three turnovers and a minus-eight plus/minus rating. Smith has been no stranger to prolific scoring efforts this season in Delaware, averaging 26.1 points per game in 22 contests. He’s scored 30 or more points nine times, including a 50-point outburst earlier this month. “I tried to get in the lane,” S...
