Share this: David Ortiz already has received plenty of recognition from various Major League Baseball teams during his final season, but the club he visited Friday has something no one else has: Vin Scully. The legendary Los Angeles Dodgers announcer took the reins when Ortiz and the Boston Red Sox came to town for a three-game series, honoring the slugger with an awesome video tribute that recalled Ortiz’s childhood in the Dominican Republic and his contributions to the Red Sox. Ortiz also was joined on the field by former teammates Nomar Garciaparra, Adrian Gonzalez and Dave Roberts, who presented him with a $10,000 check to the David Ortiz Children’s Fund. It’s going to be hard for other teams to top that without Scully’s voice. Thumbnail photo

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Late Strike Lifts Real Madrid To El Clasico Triumph (Video)
The odds were stacked against Real Madrid in Saturday’s showdown with Barcelona. But in “El Clasico,” all bets are off, especially when two of the best players in the world are on the field. This time it was Cristiano Ronaldo, not Lionel Messi, who played the role of hero. With the two La Liga (Spanish first division) rivals tied at Nou Camp with under 10 minutes to play, the Real Madrid striker corralled a Gareth Bale cross and buried it into the net for the deciding goal in the 85th minute. Real Madrid’s 2-1 win snapped Barcelona’s 39-game home winning streak and helped keep its La Liga hopes alive, as the club now...

Some of the hardest, most important lessons are learned in high school, some of our most transitive years. Just ask Burrillville High School, who learned the hard life lesson that you don’t celebrate until you’ve actually won something. The Broncos thought they had won a Rhode Island state championship in basketball, and one BHS player celebrated in kind. The only problem, of course, was that time hadn’t actually expired. The premature celebration was, just that, premature. The referees added time back on the clock after ruling Chariho High School had retrieved the ball thrown in the air as part of Burrillville’s celebration and called timeout...
