Share this: The United States almost always is in the race for the most medals in the Summer Olympics, and it’s no different this year in Rio de Janeiro. Team USA earned the first gold medal of the games Saturday when 19-year-old Ginny Thrasher won the women’s 10-meter air rifle. No, not only for having an awesome name, but also for becoming the United States’ first gold medalist at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Thrasher won gold in the women’s 10m air rifle competition Saturday. She dethroned 2012 gold medalist Yi Siling, forcing the Chinese sharp-shooter to settle for a bronze medal.
