Share this: NEW YORK — UFC president Dana White announced Saturday night that UFC 205, the promotion’s inaugural event in the Empire State, drew 20,472 fans to Madison Square Garden, with a $17.7 million gate that set records for the arena and the sport. The Fight of the Night was welterweight champion Tyron Woodley’s majority draw against Stephen Thompson. Performances of the Night came from Conor McGregor, who became the first UFC two-division champion, and Yoel Romero, who defeated Chris Weidman with a third-round TKO and had an interesting exchange with middleweight champ Michael Bisping. White also said UFC 205 pay-per-view sales set a record, but he didn’t provide any numbers. Thumbnail photo via Adam Hunger/USA TODAY Sports Images More Stories Source link

Mookie Betts Enjoys Celtics Game In Boston One Day After Knee Surgery
Share this: Mookie Betts wasn’t about to let something like a silly knee surgery ruin his weekend. The Boston Red Sox right fielder was at TD Garden on Friday night to watch the Boston Celtics crush the New York Knicks, one day after he had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. And Betts caught up with NESN’s Emerson Lotzia during the game. Betts talked about his knee, awards season, bench coach Torey Lovullo’s departure for the Arizona Diamondbacks and much, much more. Check it out in the video above from “NESN Sports Today,” presented by People’s United Bank. More Stories Source link

Share this: The Boston Bruins are heading west. The Bruins, fresh off a 5-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday, are hitting the road for three straight games, beginning with a Saturday night showdown in Arizona with the Coyotes. The B’s won’t play at the TD Garden until next Saturday, but their balanced attack of late should help them navigate the next week away from home. “I think it’s coming around,” coach Claude Julien told BostonBruins.com. “You’ve got some of those lines — David Krejci with David Backes back… Krejci is finding his stride as well. They have been a better line obviously. Ryan (Spooner) was good (Thursday), (Riley Nash) with (Austin) Czarnik and Matty Beleskey. Matty is playing better than he did

Celtics Wrap: Boston Crushes Knicks 115-87 Behind Strong Effort By Isaiah Thomas
Share this: It wasn’t perfect, but the Boston Celtics certainly will take it. The Celtics halted their three-game losing streak and returned to .500 on Friday by dismantling the New York Knicks in a 115-87 win. Boston’s rebounding and defense didn’t look much better than in past performances, but it almost didn’t matter after three consecutive bad losses, including one each to the lowly Denver Nuggets and Washington Wizards. Isaiah Thomas carried the Celtics on his back, but the point guard wasn’t the only one worth talking about. Thanks to coach Brad Stevens changing the starting five, the Celtics’ offense almost looked like a whole new team. Here are the takeaways from Friday’s win. STARTING FIVEIsaiah Thomas, Avery Bradley, Marcus Smart, Kelly Olynyk, Amir Johnson. FIRST
Barack Obama Shouts Out J.R. Smith For Wearing Shirt During Cavs’ White House Vi…
Share this: The Cleveland Cavaliers were honored at the White House on Thursday, and they all showed up in their best formal attire. Even J.R. Smith. The Cavs shooting guard went on quite a few shirtless escapades after Cleveland won its first NBA Championship in June, including partying in Las Vegas after Game 7 against the Golden State Warriors, riding through the Cavs’ victory parade and even playing a round of golf. But Smith kept his shirt on for his trip to Washington, D.C., and President Barack Obama was thankful for the gesture. You can’t really come back from getting roasted by the leader of the free world, but, hey, at least Smith’s an NBA champ. Thumbnail photo via Geoff Burke/USA TODAY Network More Stories Source link
Improvements In Bruins’ Overall Game Evident In Win Over Blue Jackets
Share this: Just about everything went well for the Boston Bruins on Thursday. The B’s earned a 5-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, and four of those goals were scored by either a defenseman or bottom-six forwards. Secondary scoring production can’t get much better than that. And the one goal that did come from the top two lines was David Backes’ first score since the season opener. But that wasn’t the only good thing Bruins coach Claude Julien saw from his squad. “I think our overall game is coming around,” Julien told NESN’s Andy Brickley and Jack Edwards on “Bruins Overtime Live.” “We’ve been good lately with special teams, and even if we didn’t score (Thursday night) on our power play, we still had some
